Broken Phalange

This morning I woke up to a text from my mom saying that my dad thought that he had broken his finger in his sleep last night. She sent me this picture:

When I got off work this afternoon I gave my dad a call and he was leaving work early and was on the train headed home to go to the doctor! It turns out that he had broken his finger. It was so bad that they had to cut off his wedding ring!

Ouch!

The phalanges are the bones that make up your fingers, they are connected to the metacarpals , which are then connected to a bunch of little bones in the base of the hand. From there we have two bones, the radius (on your thumb side) and the ulna (on the pinky side). And those are the bones that make up the lower half of your arm!

Car Stickers

I saw this little number on a car on one of my runs... only in Utah would you find a "Flirt to Convert" bumper sticker.

Amanda and I saw this last weekend at Raintree. I made her turn the car around and shine her lights on it so I could get a good picture. Be a Doer. Haha we had a good laugh about it.

Not a sticker, just something else random off my phone: Two days ago, I used a pencil sharpener in class. That was the first time in the last three years of college that I used a pencil sharpener in class. Wow.

Dennis the Cadaver

Today's anatomy class was amazing. For the past three weeks we have just been working with bones, but today they brought out the cadavers. As I walked into class, I didn't know what to expect. The smell is what hit me first and made me a little nervous.
As our TA took the cover off the head and torso of the cadaver, I felt pretty overwhelmed with emotion. In a way it was exactly what I was expecting, but at the same time, it was totally different. Our cadaver still had hair on his chin and eyelashes. It hit me at that point that this used to be a real person with thoughts and feelings and this person had donated his body to help me better understand human anatomy.
Even though I felt totally overwhelmed by the 200+ vocab words they threw at us, I was totally amazed at how cool the human body is and how important all these pieces are. I wish I could take pictures but we are instructed not to.
No doubt about it, it is a really really hard class, but I am really enjoying myself.

Inspiration

As I am sitting at my computer trying to study all the parts of all the bones in our body and getting discouraged and tired, my friend texted me this:
"Well study then! Idk if I want to go to a dentist that didn't get good grades"
That's a good point. Thanks kiddo.

What a Day!!

Today has been such a great day. Super busy, which is nice now that I am reflecting upon my past week. Getting a job in college is hard, I am only taking 7 credits this semester and only working ~30 hours and it takes effort to manage my day, but at the time it is keeping me productive which is really good for me right now.
So today, I stayed up way to late surfing the web.

This morning I had a work meeting at 7:30. That meant I had to leave by 7, which also meant that I had to get up at 6 to shower  and get ready. The meeting went until 9:30, I had a chance to take an hour nap, then head up to campus. I had two hour lecture and two hour lab... it was a drag. Around 3 I got a text from a friend saying that he had two Sundance movie tickets for tonight and the opportunity to go boarding and wanted to know if I'd go... one small problem. I was in class till 4, and I had work tonight, 5-close.
But I wasn't letting that stop me, I hopped on my phone, texted everyone from work, and waited. At 4 I told my friend that he was going to have to find someone else. But at 4:30, right as I was getting ready to leave for work, a Co-worker called and took my shift. Mike, if you ever read this.. Thank you so much!
Thank goodness the tickets hadn't been given away yet! We were up on the mountain in 20 minutes and got in a solid run before our movie. (Solid for me is midpoint, going down mostly toeside because I'm a huge baby...)
We saw Gun Hill Road. It's about a man who has been in prison for the last three years and comes home to his old world turned upside down. It covered a handful of taboo topics but was presented in a way that was very well done.
And then after we did another handful of runs and guess what... I got over my fear of boarding heel side!! (This is a big thing for me). Ended the night with pizza and wings... now i should be memorizing the parts of the os coxa/pectoral girdle and all the bones in the hand, but I'd rather blog about my day!

**in addition... the date from last night continued being weird. I told him I was sorry and that I wasn't interested and didn't want to continue to waste his time.... he texted me back calling me a spoiled brat and rude. Here is Amanda's side of the story.

Social Experiment Date.

Well tonight was interesting.

All I have to say is that I have awesome friends that care about me enough to spy on me. But it is a good thing because "you never know if he will knock you out, duct tape you, and throw your phone in the back seat of a car" -Garrett Evans

Thanks guys. I owe you one!!

The Dinner Party

Our dinner party tonight was a success!!

Anna, Amanda, Mary, Michelle and I decided we wanted to get to know more people so we had ourselves a little Mexican Dinner Fiesta. I made my mom's Cafe Rio Chicken. It was easy and cheap.  I had many requests for it so here is the recipe:

3 lbs chicken breasts
1 TBSP cumin
1 small bottle Zesty Italian Dressing
3 cloves garlic, minced
1 TBSP chili powder
Combine all and cook on low all day in crock-pot. Drain juices (I don't), reserving half a cup. Shred chicken and mix back with reserved jucies. Enjoy!
Serve with cut up lettuce, salsa, onions, tomatoes and a corn tortilla.
Serves 4

A Great Day.

Friday was such a great day! Reflecting back on it, I am in such a good mood how it turned out!
I had to go work (I opened). Which by the way, I got a job last week at T-Mobile! It's really fun and it's funny because I have an iPhone. Even though January is a terrible month for retail (because everyone spent all their money for Christmas) I feel like this is a good job for me.
But back to my day... half way through work one of the kids that works at a phone accessory kiosk came in to chat with us about our most popular phones. While talking, he saw my phone and was in disgust! Mostly because I had a hideous case on my phone and my screen protector looks like it was put on by a 2 year old and is covered with air bubbles because i'm too lazy to rub them out, he kept telling me my phone had leprosy. Long story short, he told me to swing by after work and he'd "hook me up". Which he did! I got a free cover for my phone, and he put on a new screen protector and only charged me $15 (which normally it is $25 for an installation fee). My phone looks awesome now.

And then Amanda and I had a little girls night. It was a blast. We saw Burlesque:
As far as the storyline went... it was one of the worst movies I have ever seen... BUT the singing and the dancing was sooooo good that it made up for the poorly constructed plot. After it was over, Amanda and I decided we wanted to be Burlesque dancers. We went home, put on cute little dresses and went out dancing. We are still considering choreographing a Burlesque number for our upcoming ward talent show... but that might not be the best idea since we are still considered the 'black sheep apartment'. But in the end, a life of fishnet stockings and corsets might not pay as well as dental hygiene (or would it...).

Rice King

Today I had the chance to try a new restaurant here in provo... well new to me that is. It's actually been around for a while. It is called Rice King and it was awesome. I've heard people talk about it before and I've wanted to give it a try, but it wasn't until today when a friend called me up to take me. For $4.99 I got egg drop soup, a huge helping of fried rice, an entrĂ©e and a spring roll. Super good, filled me up, didn't even finish the whole thing.

If you are looking for a great Chinese food restaurant here in town that is cheap, close and has good service, I recommend Rice King.

Fashion Always Repeats Itself

I have memories of it being in the yearly years or grade school and my mom putting me in leggings. I remember I had a pair of rainbow stripped leggings... Eventually I thought I was too cool for leggings, then I really only wanted to wear jeans, but it had to be flare jeans because I did not want any pants tight around my ankles...
NOW, i LOVE skinny jeans, I own many pairs. I think they are cute, and I feel like flared jeans really are not that flattering (at all) and yesterday, I bought something that many years ago I was so happy to throw out of my closet and never wear again. What was it? A pair of legging stirrups!!
I could not resist, they are adorable and perfect for boot wearing.
Fashion repeats itself. And even if it doesnt, you might want to hold on to that shoulder pad sweater to wear to an 80s/early 90s party

How to Sell Back Your Textbooks

If your university is anything like mine, they do a great job of ripping you off when it comes to selling back text books! You spend $500 and at the end of the semester get back maybe (if you are lucky) $100. Well I wish someone showed me the ropes when I was a freshman, but now that I am in my second semester of my junior year, I have figured out the tricks...
(1) DO NOT buy your texts books from your school without looking first on amazon. Acquire your book list and use the ISBN number on the back of your text book (should be right near the barcode) and type those numbers directly into amazon. Amazon is almost always the cheapest. You can try other book selling sites, but amazon usually comes out on top and is one of the most trusting.
(2) if you can't find your book online, you'll have to go to your bookstore and buy it
(3) when you get your text books, WRITE IN THE FRONT COVER how much you paid. That way you can make a better judgement on how much to sell it for at the end of the semester.
(4) NEVER sell your books back to your school... sell them yourself on amazon. Go to amazon, type in the ISBN, click on your book. On the right side of the screen there will be a link asking if you want to 'sell this book?". Click on that, register as a new seller, enter in your banking info and volia! Check your email every day until you get a buyer! You'll have to send the book out yourself, but that's okay, amazon reimburses you for that.

And that's how it done. You'll save hundreds doing it this way. It takes a little work, but worth it.

The Human Body

This semester I have the opportunity of taking both anatomy and physiology. Already I am in love with these classes. It will be hard, but I know that I am going to learn so much. Today in physiology our teacher read the following quote given by President Hinckley:

“Have you ever contemplated the wonder of yourself, the eyes with which you see, the ears with which you hear, the voice with which you speak?"

“No camera ever built can compare with the human eye. No method of communication ever devised can compare with the voice and the ear. No pump ever built will run as long or as efficiently as the human heart.

“What a remarkable thing each of us is. We can think by day and dream by night. We can speak and hear, smell and feel."

“I believe the human body to be the creation of divinity."

-Gordon B. Hinckley, This I Believe, Fireside Address, BYU, 1 March 1992

Really?

When Jana and I stepped off the plane it was 27 degrees... why on earth was this girl wearing a skirt and shirt? in addition to that... she would not move out of our way so we could get our bags. Kids these days.

Time Really Does Fly

Two weeks of vacation goes by way to fast! Love you so much!
